Palo Alto AYSO programs are open to all boys and girls between the
ages of 5 and 18 who want to register and play
soccer. There are no tryouts. Interest and enthusiasm are
the only criteria for playing. Any level of experience is
welcome, from beginners to advanced.

Team Formation
Players are grouped into divisions by their age as of July 31,
which is the cutoff date for AYSO nationwide. This means that
most divisions include kids from multiple school grades.
Players with fall birthdays who would be in a division
younger than most of their grade may optionally request
on the registration form to play up into the
older division. Note: Play up only applies when the next
older year would be in another division. For example, an
8th grader who does not turn 13 until fall would still be
in Under-14 because it includes both 12 and 13 year olds.
The younger divisions are single year. Beginning with
Under-12, the divisions have
players of more than one year. For example, Under-12
is 10 and 11 year olds.

AYSO balances teams, which means we distribute the kids as evenly as
possible according to age, experience, and current skill level. In
addition, we must factor in people's practice field or school
preference and "cannot practice on" days, and field
availability.
Practice Field
The preferred practice field or school you specify on the registration
form indicates your preferred geographic area. This provides
guidance to the team formers, but it is not a guarantee that
your team will practice at that location. Each field has a limited set
of teams and age groups practicing there. Not all age groups
practice at all locations. Requests for a particular
location may not match the places available.
Older teams (Under-12 through Under-19) practice mainly at the middle schools
and multi-field parks; younger divisions (Under-11 through Under-7) are assigned to
the elementary schools and neighborhood parks. The Under-6 division does
not hold practices separate from its Saturday afternoon sessions, which
are at JLS.
Notification
Players are notified of their team assignments in late August.
Once teams are assigned, coaches begin contacting their teams.
Email notification will be sent to those who specified an
email address on the registration form. WebYouthSoccer will also have
your assignment information when teams are assigned.
